Meet Llewellyne Arden
About Your Doula
I assisted my first birth in the year 2000, when I happened to be in the right place at the right time to be available to help a family member during her hospital birth. From that profound experience I realized the incredible power of birth and the need for informed assistance to help birthing mothers feel more comfort and ease during the birthing journey with their babies.
I gave birth in the same year to my first born as a home birth after having complications in my second trimester which caused me to be on bed rest. To overcome the fear and debilitation that this complication presented, I leaned into the yoga practices to prepare my body, mind, and spirit to have the strength, endurance and relaxation techniques for birthing. The empowerment and successful home birth that I experienced from this was a powerful eye opener for me to learn more and be able to offer this to other pregnant people on their unique journeys.
Since then I have been dedicated to teaching prenatal yoga and developing a preparation for birth program that includes breathing practices, positioning to assist in pelvic opening and descent of the baby, the role of partner support in birthing and home preparation for home births. I received such positive feedback from so many women who gave birth with greater ease using these practices that I wanted to be more available to assist in births.
I started assisting more in home births as part of birth support teams and eventually apprenticed with a seasoned doula for 3 and ½ years to learn firsthand the skills of what it is to be in service as a doula for pregnant women and their families. I finally received my official doula training from the Simkin Center at Bastyr and can now offer continuous care from early pregnancy, preparation for birth, during birth and postpartum.
